Road trips are by far one the most interesting ways to visit the United States, it’s just not the same as visiting a handful of cities via airplane as experiencing the open road and everything it entails.

The first thing you must prepare when planning a road trip is the vehicle you’re going to use, after all, you´ll be depending on it for the whole trip.


So, the first thing you should do is to make sure to have a vehicle that’s up to the task. This means that the car you’re going to use must be hardy, well maintained, and above all, comfortable as you’re going to spend a lot of time in the car.

Instead of using your own, you can rent a car, this way you´ll always have a well-maintained vehicle that’s up to the task and you won’t be limited by the car you have. You even get to choose the kind of vehicle that best suits your trip.


For example, if you’re traveling with a lot of people you may choose a van or mini-van. If you’re traveling solo then you may choose a smaller more cost-effective car, if you´re crossing harsher roads you can choose an SUV.

Tips for the Journey


Now that we have a good way to get a vehicle for the trip, we should further discuss some tips involving the journey itself.


Do some research about the journey you’re going to take: A well-informed traveler will always go far, so make sure to know a couple of important facts about your destinations before hitting the road. You don’t need to make a 300-page report about your journey, but knowing things like the weather at your destination and the possible road stops that you may find on the way, can be crucial.


Nothing is worse than getting hungry or thirsty in the middle of nowhere, so pack some snacks and plenty of water just in case. If you’re crossing desert roads such as those in Nevada, bring extra water.

Take the Mythic Route 66

Known as “The Mother Road” or “The Main Street of America” route 66 is perhaps one of the world’s most famous highways, many singers, writers, and artists, in general, have immortalized this highway, and now it’s an icon of American culture. It’s basically a landmark you can only experience by making a road trip!


It starts in Chicago and goes all the way to Santa Monica Beach in Los Angeles. The highway crosses right through iconic landscapes such as those in Monument Valley. This is the quintessential road trip; you can’t miss this one!


Los Angeles to Las Vegas

Making this trip is often a rite of passage for many young people in Los Angeles. They begin the journey as adventurous youth in Los Angeles and end it as, hopefully not too hung-over adults in Sin City.


Now, the desert roads that run in between Los Angeles and Las Vegas may seem a little bit forsaken (and in some sections of the journey they are) but you’ll also find a lot of quirky and amazing places to visit in both California and Nevada. You´ll find everything from art installations with thousands of metal and glass trees at Bottle Tree Ranch, to strange pillars of colorful rock at Seven Magic mountains.


U.S. Route 1

This Highway goes from Maine to Key West passing through pretty much every important site on the East Coast. From Maine to New York City to sunny Miami. You’ll see everything from historic sites to delicious restaurants to beautiful countryside vistas.


Pack clothes for all types of climates as you’ll be going from the cold north to the everlasting summer of the tropics!
