Fantastic Driving Roads in Mexico

There are roads, and then there are roads. Some of these utilitarian architectural feats are blessed with views and it is a pleasure to drive on them. These so-called driving roads are scattered around the world and if you are lucky enough to have one close to you, take the opportunity to explore them.

East Cape Drive in Baja California Sur

A lot of people visit Baja California and Baja California Sur for their pristine beaches and excellent tourist offer. However, if you’re not interested in the organized tourist experience, you are in for a treat on East Cape Drive in the Mexican state of Baja California Sur. Make sure you have a sturdy car, preferably a 4×4 since parts of it are gravel and not paved. However, the payout is spectacular. Nestled in the heart of the Oaxaca State, this water formation boasts some spectacular natural pools overlooking a mountainous backdrop and a mild climate.

The road leading to this place snakes through the mountain passes and valleys, occasionally offering you a glimpse of the landscape way down below you and far off in the distance.

Baluarte Bridge, Mazatlan

The tallest bridge in Latin America – check. Fantastical mountainous surroundings – check. For most adventurers and pleasure drivers, this is all the information they need to know.

However, if you feel like you need to know more before you set out, just remember that this is a mountainous road that crosses some spectacular valleys and goes through several tunnels before the view opens and you spot the bridge in all of its glory.

Most people slow down on the bridge in order to take in all of the majesties of the view, so chances are that you will be able to admire it for a long time. There’s no way to safely stop at the bridge and admire the view for an extended period of time, though, so savor the experience while it lasts.

These are just some of the lesser-known gems of Mexico. Such a huge country is bound to have plenty more beautiful roads and sports, especially when you take into account that Mexico has deserts, beaches, mountains, jungles, and a host of other environments.
